- Did You Know?
- As part of an effort to make San Francisco a model for environmental sustainability, the city adopted an Integrated Pest Management Ordinance in 1996 which among other provisions phases out the use of toxic pesticides in all city owned buildings, grounds, parks and golf courses. Similar ordinances have been adopted around the state including Marin County to the north and Santa Cruz to the south.
- Traditional home gardens and lawns use up to ten times more toxic chemicals per acre than commercial farming
- The greatest source of water pollution is from run off from the streets; including fertilizers, pesticides, gasoline and oil.
- Use of a gas powered leaf blower or lawn mower for one hour creates as much air pollution as driving a car 100 miles.
- The average 2000 square foot lawn requires 10,000 gallons of water per month to maintain, the same amount of water in an average swimming pool!
- Pesticides don't work. Since the 1940s crops lost to insect damage have increased from 31% to 37% despite a 33 fold increase in the quantity of pesticides used and a tenfold increase in their toxicity.
- A National Academy of Science study in 1993 demonstrated that the most vulnerable members of our society, our children, may be the most susceptible to the adverse effects of pesticide exposure - including asthma, neurological damage, and certain types of cancer.
